Oxford:
We reunited Eddy with his little brother in Oxford, or as it seems to us, Owen-town, (he really knows a lot of people there). We were staying at the backpackers where he used to work and they very kindly put us up for free as well as showing us the local pubs. I had come down with a bit of a cold so spent a lot of time sleeping but we did manage to see the Botanical Gardens and the University Museum- both very beautiful. We also took some time out to go see the 'Oxford Murders', a new film that is set there and was shot in lots of places that we'd been to that day.
We decided to come to the Cotswolds for a week as it is much closer than the Lakes District. We found a hotel on the net and booked in, and hopped on a bus all ready for a cosy, kitschy week. Unfortunately, our hotel turned out to be in an industrial park about 2 miles out of town...can't win them all.
Yesterday we looked around Tewkesbury, the nearest town to where we are staying, and walked around the fields where the definitive battle of the War of the Roses was fought. Today we caught the bus into Cheltenham and walked out to Prestbury, the (second) most haunted town in England. We didn't see any ghosts but we saw some beautiful Cotswolds scenery and thatched, wisteria draped cottages. There were whole fields full of buttercups- we would have frolicked amongst them but we were wearing way too many layers of clothing.
This weekend coming in the Spring bank holiday and there are festivals happening everywhere. We hopefully are going to the famous Gloucester cheese rolling competition- not to compete, (that's only for lunatics) but to watch other people risking their lives in an attempt to win a wheel of cheese! Though as Eddy points out- it is a lot of cheese.
Love to everyone, Susie xox

Dear Susan,
Mum and I are enjoying your blog. Heard that you are settling in Bath. We were both very impressed with Bath when we visited there many years ago.
We headed off on holiday just before you left. Only spent about a week away altogether. I was very impressed with Jindabyne and Charlotte Pass without snow. It was really beautiful and it was a balmy day. Reminded me a little of some of the wilder scenery in Scotland. We timed Autumn perfectly in Victoria. When we arrived at Mt Beauty in Victoria in the cold and wet they were having a town fete. They had tents up for people to have their hot lunches and a fire burning in half of a 40 gallon drum and they even had a couple of Yurts (Mongolian tents) There was a little red headed boy playing the trumpet quiet well. He did well considering it was cold enough for a car to be parked nearby with a couple of inches of snow on it that had just come down out of the hills. Bright was stunning, it lived up to its name well. The other highlight of our trip was staying at Eildon about an hour north of Melbourne. They have a dam there and a weir across the river below it which forms a large lake for the town. We had a motel room with pondage view. It had autumn coloured trees along the edge, a bridge with a little beach where we could see a man in his wadders fly fishing and hills and mountains receding into the distance. It got pretty wet and foggy after that and we headed home via Forbes and Bathurst. It was good to see MacKenzie walking.
Unfortunately we are home again but just heading into the long weekend as it is the official Queens birthday this coming Monday. We had an English tourist in the library this morning who was amazed that we have a day off for the Queens birthday and they don't in England. She came in to find out about the whale watching boat from Ettalong. We haven't had one before but they are starting it up for the month of July. I will let you know if I do it. Mum said I'll have to find someone else to head out to sea with.
Anyway hope you and Eddy are both well and having a great time.
love from Aunty Jane and Grandma
